What is labia reduction surgery?

The Vulva is a complex area of your body - it is associated with fertility, reproduction, sexuality, genital confidence, and overall self confidence. It is also an emotional part of your being.

The labia, especially the inner labia, come in many shapes and sizes. Some women have inner genital lips that are enlarged, irregular, and protrude far beyond the level of the outside labia-this can be problematic and severely embarrassing. Sometimes both inner labia are very wide and/or long (this is called labial hypertrophy), and sometimes the right and left inner labia are different in size and shape and seem malformed. Some women are born with enlarged labia, while others develop enlarged labia over time.

While some women are not concerned with having mildly enlarged labia, many women don't feel comfortable or confident with the size or shape of their labia. This can result in avoidance of sex and loss of libido, intimacy and relationship problems.

Many women request surgical repair when their lips are asymmetrical, or especially large and abnormal looking.

A simple reduction of enlarged or abnormal looking inner labia for women who require it, is sensible and reasonable.

What is labia reduction surgery?
Labia reduction surgery, labiaplasty and vulvaplasty are terms used to describe a relatively minor surgical procedure that involves removing excess tissue to decrease the size and change the shape of longer and/or larger labia minora (inside genital lips). This does not interfere with sexual satisfaction, orgasm or the feel of the labial skin.

Why do some women request surgery to make their labia smaller?
Some women have larger labia minora (inside genital lips), also called Labia Hypertrophy.

Many woman find the larger, protuberant, asymmetric, or irregular appearance cosmetically undesirable; Most women would prefer it if their inner labia did not protrude beyond the level of the outside labia; Some women feel discomfort when walking, cycling, exercising, or wearing certain types of underwear (like thongs) or tight pants; Some women feel embarrassed to shower at a gym for example, where others can see their protruding labia; There can be personal hygiene problems; Some women are troubled by having large labia and indicate that it causes them pain and discomfort during intercourse, or severe embarrassment.

For some, this loss of sexual confidence and/or a lack of sexual enjoyment can lead to avoidance of intimate relationships.

Is surgery necessary?
There is evolving interest in maintaining and improving genital health both physically and emotionally. All women have a natural and unique body shape; similarly, there is variation in the size of the inner labia. However, if your inner labia are too long or unusual in appearance, it is unnecessary to live with this and feel embarrassed or unhappy with the way you look and feel. There is a solution involving relatively minor surgery that is done at our clinic.
